Why Theological Education Must Change or Die

Seminaries and divinity schools continue to perform a vital function for the existing church. As denominations continue to decline, however, many are struggling with challenging realities, not least of which is that they may be preparing clergy for the kind of church that may not exist for much longer. As the Christian church continues to adapt and evolve in the twenty-first century, theological education needs to change with it – becoming more accessible to a wider range of students and more adaptable to the unique needs of diverse and rapidly-changing ministry contexts. This workshop will be a facilitated open conversation about the specific needs that theological education must adapt to fill in the twenty-first century church, the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches, and the pros and cons of innovative/experimental models that have recently arisen.
