A Safe Place for Men to Share Openly in the Context of the MeToo Era (in mixed company)

More often than you may think, men who are supportive of the MeToo Movement may not feel safe sharing their true and sometimes-confused thoughts and feelings. It can be difficult to know how to safely explore MeToo related questions such as “over-political-correctness” and “shared-accountability” without feeling like some women will instantly label you a jerk. Or to raise questions like “might/should there be a sense of male gender guilt?” without receiving scorn from your male friends. As a supportive heterosexual male, how do you, or should you respond to the different extremes often expressed by your female friends and colleagues? Your male friends and colleagues? Where and how does MeToo fit with your Faith? The goal of this session is simply to provide a safe place for men to openly share their thoughts, feelings and confusion, in mixed company.

Learning to Love an Irrational Jesus: What a Fully Human Jesus Means for Fully Human People

By Uncategorized

We’re pretty solid and Christ’s divinity in the church- we’ve spent a lot of airtime on that. But what about his humanity? If we talk about Jesus’ humanity at all it’s often apologetically. Based on my work in The Irrational Jesus I make a fully throated pitch for using what we know about cognitive bias, what Dan Ariely calls our “predictable irrationality” to highlight areas of Jesus’ full humanity. And we’ll learn about common cognitive biases, including implicit racial, gender, and sexual identity bias, and learn how understanding more about our bias makes us better able to work well and play with others.

Reclaiming Our Roots: Advocacy in the SBC

During WGF 2017, James began pondering the implications of what “progressive flight” has done to create conservative echo-chambers in the American church by eliminating diversity in thought and theology. Specifically he felt concerned for members of the LGBTQ+ community, past and present, who seemingly have no allies in the churches they are raised in. James and Lacey Mai, both ex-pats of Southern Baptist churches, have spent the last two years re-entering the Southern Baptist community with the intention of advocating for the marginalized while building bridges with our conservative brothers and sisters in Christ.
