This spoken word performance brings an authentic experience of Black womanhood off the margins and places it at the center of the performance–which is an act of resistance and inspiration. As the poem chronicles my journey of orientation, disorientation, and reorientation as a Black woman of a certain socioeconomic status, it explores the public and communal implications. Placing Black womanhood at the center of this piece not only validates that our stories matter, but creates space to glean wisdom and insights for transformation through a womanist lens that interprets contextual implications at the intersection of the three primary “isms” of racism, sexism, and classism—a triple threat to women of color. The idea is that truth-telling is healing, life-giving, and transformative when we choose to courageously confront and embrace the whole truth in all its shadow and light instead of giving in to the ego’s programs of shame, guilt, and fear.
